About Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS)
The Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) is a Govt of India scheme for model residential school, specifically for Scheduled Tribes (ST) All over India. This is one of the flagship interventions of Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Govt of India and was introduced in the year 1997-98 to ensure tribal students get access to quality education in the remote tribal areas of India. EMRSs are set up in States and UTs with grants under Article 275(1) of Constitution of India. As per the budget 2018-19, every block with more than 50% ST population at least 20,000 tribal persons, will have an Eklavya Model Residential School by year 2022.
The govt. gives one time ₹30 lakh grant for establishing the school, thereafter up to ₹30 lakh per school annually. Additional cost is borne by state govt. At the end of 2018, a total of 284 EMRS have been sanctioned with maximum of 32 approved in Madhya Pradesh. There is around 226 EMRS functional across in India and 68 of them are affiliated to the CBSE.
